Some aspects to consider when planning the inscription to be put on the memorial are that the amount and layout of the inscription will affect the size and shape of the memorial. Should the inscription fill the memorial or will another inscription be added in the future?
Advantages: classic appearance, low or no maintenance, cheaper than painting or gilding.
Disadvantages: is difficult to read if the stone is damp.
Advantages: easily visible, choice of colours, not as expensive as gilding.
Disadvantages: may require re-painting in under 10 years.
Advantages: very easily visible, should not require re-gilding for at least 10 years.
Disadvantages: more expensive than incised-only or incised and painted.
If an inscription is to be added to an existing memorial, the headstone (and perhaps base) will be removed from the site and brought to the workshop, where it can be thoroughly cleaned and dried.
If the memorial is too large or difficult to be brought into the workshop, the inscription will be incised while the stone is in situ. This work can only be carried out during spells of dry weather as the stone has to be thoroughly dry to allow stencil tape to adhere to it and paint or gold to be properly applied.
Inscriptions are subject to the cemetery and churchyard regulations in place at the time of applying for permission and these regulations are subject to change.
Please see below examples of layouts and suggestions for wording. If you have the basic details (name, date of death, relationships), we can help you to compile the inscription.
